Due to the overwhelming generosity and amazing outpouring from thousands of people all across the country, The Maddie James Seaside Learning Center is now a reality –and we know that many of you had just a little something to do with that; we can’t thank you enough. Construction will soon begin and the Center should be up and running before the end of the year. The Maddie James Foundation will continue to support The Dana Point Ocean Institute and will continue to fund The Maddie James Seaside Learning Center at the Ocean Institute with an annual A Mile for Maddie, an event which we thoroughly enjoyed participating in this year and look forward to being a part of for years to come.
Our heartfelt thanks to all who contributed in making this Dream Come True
Four simple words that form the basis of our business,
four simple words that give our clients peace of mind.
At Biehl, et al., we practice what we preach; we live by these four simple words – technology, experience, quality, integrity. We have committed ourselves professionally to an uncommon level of quality and integrity. We strive to maintain the highest technology our industry has to offer. Our owner-operator court reporting experience spans more than sixty years, giving us the benefit of living through the ever-evolving changes in the industry, participating on the cutting edge and being there in the forefront to know the landscape inside and out. Our business philosophy and hands-on management style, in concert with a personable and experienced staff that knows our clients' needs and how best to meet them, is what sets us apart from others.
Licensed as a Certified Shorthand Reporter and Registered Professional Reporter for 28 years, among the first in the country to become licensed as a Certified Realtime Reporter, reporting on an almost daily basis in depositions, arbitrations and trials throughout the United States, Central and South America as well as abroad, Laurie’s philosophy is “Wherever the clients need us, they’ll get us.” Licensed in Illinois, California and Texas as well as nationally, her experience in reporting and managing cases from the first deposition to the last is testament to the old adage “Consistency is the key to Quality,” a consistency that gives our clients peace of mind. While reporting and being involved behind the scenes in the day-to-day running of the office, she is a devoted wife and mother, very involved with her children and their various activities, an avid community volunteer, member of the National Charity League, Canyon Chapter, as well as the National Association of Professional Women.
John’s experience encompasses more than 30 years in environmental and business litigation as a Certified Shorthand Reporter and Registered Professional Reporter. John now enjoys overseeing the day-to-day business operations at Biehl, et al. By staying abreast of technological advances in the industry, he is better able to assist clients with tech-related issues on a more frequent basis. His daily interaction with clients on a personal level is something he is enjoying and finding very fulfilling. The flexibility of ownership allows him the benefit of being able to volunteer in many activities in the community with his family while maintaining a full-time role at the office.
The all-important “et al.,” our reporting and office staff is comprised of a multitude of people with diverse areas of emphasis. The breadth and depth of their various personalities and life experiences contribute richly to our overall qualifications. Our reporters and our staff are career-oriented and committed to our clients as well as our profession. The reporters are not the part-time, Tuesday-and-Thursday garden-variety reporters that so many agencies contract with; they are committed to maintaining their professional credentials and staying ahead of the rest, while finding time to enjoy a healthy work/life balance. Like our reporters, our staff lives by the credo of doing what it takes to get the job done in a timely, professional and courteous manner. Together, our reporters and staff solidify the belief that the sum is greater than its parts; this is what sets them – and us - apart from the others in the field.
We offer the following:
Our experienced and professional staff is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; after-hours emails are the preferred method of communication and will be responded to in a timely manner. Our “Livenote for Lawyers” is intended for everyone who wants to use the product but doesn’t have the time, energy nor desire to sift through the 400-plus page book Livenote, now Thomsen West, provides when it certifies trainers on its system. We’ve condensed it down to less than 40 pages of key material for quick and easy reference. We teach from this handy-dandy guide and hope you find it as useful as we and our clients do.
Believing the best measure of the commitment and success of any business is reflected in the way their clients perceive the quality of their work, we invite you to take a moment and read a few comments from our valued clients.
I have worked with dozens of court reporting firms over the course of my seventeen-year legal career, including some of the larger, 'national' firms. Without question, the finest group of court reporting professionals and the most technologically-advanced firm is Biehl, et al. From scheduling assistance to on-line access to deposition transcripts, exhibits and video, Biehl, et al. can do it all. John and Laurie Biehl, and their staff of dedicated reporting professionals, take a personal interest in each case, traveling with the attorneys to guarantee that the transcripts and reporting are uniform and that all of the voluminous exhibits are kept perfectly in order and within reach. Very often, Laurie Biehl and Marianna Donner have provided computers and in-depth LiveNote assistance to attorneys attending depositions to keep the proceedings moving smoothly. So long as I have a voice in selecting the court reporting firm that will be retained for a piece of litigation, I will always zealously advocate for Biehl, et al. There is no finer firm and no more dedicated, accurate, professional and committed group of reporting professionals in the business today.
James D. Piel, Esq. Allen Stewart P.C
Far and away the best and most professional court reporting service in my experience. They not only offer the full panoply of services required in the digital age, but their reporters make special effort to learn the vocabulary and substance of the case in order to produce the most accurate and timely transcripts. They have never let me down during the seventeen years they have been working for our clients.
Ernie Getto, Partner Latham & Watkins
Laurie Biehl and her reporters are the most technology-savvy court reporters I have worked with. Not only do they know how to use all of the most up-to-date technology, they are wonderful teachers, both in sessions at the office and at depositions. Laurie and her reporters deliver a high quality product virtually - and sometimes literally - overnight.
Laura Baughman, Esq., Shareholder Baron & Budd, P.C.
John and Laurie Biehl have consistently provided quality, hands-on and friendly service over the years. I cannot sing their praises enough.
Wendy A. Tucker, Esq. Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold
All court reporters are not equal, and with so much at stake in litigation, deposition reporting must be flawless. That's why I use Biehl, et al., Certified Shorthand Reporters, Inc., exclusively. Biehl, et al., Certified Shorthand Reporters, Inc., is simply the best court reporting service I have ever used. Their reporters are accurate, professional, hard working and committed to excellence.
Layne H. Melzer, Partner Rutan & Tucker LLP
I have used Laurie Biehl and her team of excellent reporters for several years. She and her staff are prompt, accurate and utilize state-of-the-art equipment. We appreciate receiving rough transcripts on the same day as the deposition. Whether in multi-party or simply two party cases, Laurie commands the respect of all the attorneys. I cannot imagine taking a deposition with any other reporter.
Martin N. Refkin, Esq. Gallagher & Gallagher, PC

The reporters are true professionals. No job is too large or too small. Laurie Biehl and Biehl, et al., Certified Shorthand Reporters, Inc., are the gold standard in court reporting.
Gary Praglin, Partner Engstrom, Lipscomb & Lack
I first met Laurie on a large toxic tort case. Her reporting was not only accurate, but she did what it took to get testimony available as quickly as needed. She is comfortable with all deposition technology and makes you feel like you've hired not only a reporter, but a concierge. Laurie's staff has the same exceptional level of competence.I haven't used anyone else since.
